AIT GROUP COMPLETES ENERGIZATION OF SHUNT CAPACITOR BANKS AT 220KV YEN MY SUBSTATION, HUNG YEN PROVINCE

Overview of the capacitor installation area

To increase the power capacity in Northern Vietnam by over 1,000 MW before the summer season and to maximize the efficiency and transmission capability of the grid following the energization of the 500kV Quang Trach – Pho Noi transmission line, the 2025 Northern Grid Shunt Capacitor Bank Installation Project has been launched. The project includes capacitor bank installations at four 500kV substations across three provinces/cities—key regional load centers—and 17 220kV substations, including: Soc Son, Bac Ninh 2, Bac Ninh 3, Long Bien, Dong Hoa, Son Tay, Duong Kinh, Kim Dong, Yen My, Pho Cao, Hai Duong 2, Ba Che, Thanh Nghi, Vinh Tuong, Vinh Yen, Phu Tho, and Ninh Binh.

Primary equipment provided and installed by AIT Group

The project is invested by the National Power Transmission Corporation (EVNNPT), with the Northern Power Projects Management Board (NPTPMB) acting as the direct project management unit. Continuing its role in previous project phases, AIT Group was honored to be selected as the contractor responsible for supplying, transporting, and installing secondary electrical equipment (VTTB), as well as configuring SCADA systems at the 220kV Yen My Substation.

During implementation, AIT Group encountered several challenges, particularly regarding outage schedules for construction. Works were carried out under live substation conditions, demanding strict safety compliance and high precision. Determined to complete the project ahead of the national celebration, AIT Group’s engineers and workers—alongside other stakeholders—worked tirelessly, through holidays and Tet, to bring the capacitor bank installation at 220kV Yen My and the broader 2025 Northern Shunt Capacitor Project to completion five days ahead of the EVN and EVNNPT schedule.

With close direction and support EVNNPT and NPTPMB leadership, the capacitor bank at the 220kV Yen My Substation was officially accepted and energized on May 24, 2025, ensuring safe operation. The system is expected to enhance grid stability, reduce power and energy losses, and improve the operational efficiency of Vietnam Electricity (EVN). Most importantly, this project serves as a critical milestone in securing electricity supply for the Northern region during this year’s hot season, in line with directives the Prime Minister and EVN.
