PIONEERING THE APPLICATION OF GREEN TECHNOLOGIES IN VIETNAM’S POWER INDUSTRY
On October 9, 2025, with the approval and support of the Northern Power Corporation (EVNNPC), AIT Group, in cooperation with Siemens and Hitachi Vietnam, successfully energized and trial-operated two advanced, environmentally friendly electrical devices at the 110kV Van Giang Substation. This marks the first time these technologies have been applied in Vietnam, representing a significant milestone in the power sector’s green transition journey.

The two deployed products include: a 110kV SF₆-free circuit breaker manufactured by Siemens, and a distribution transformer using natural ester (biodegradable) insulating oil manufactured by Hitachi Vietnam.

The 110kV SF₆-free circuit breaker replaces traditional breakers that use SF₆—one of the most potent greenhouse gases, with a global warming potential over 20,000 times greater than CO₂. The new breaker uses an environmentally benign gas mixture that meets international IEC standards, reducing emissions while ensuring high reliability, safety, and long operational life.

In parallel, the distribution transformer using natural ester insulating oil (biodegradable oil) produced by Hitachi Vietnam replaces conventional mineral-oil transformers. Natural ester oil offers >95% biodegradability, is non-toxic, significantly reduces fire hazards, and is more environmentally friendly while improving insulation longevity.

Viscosity & temperature performanceHigher viscosity in low temps; strong thermal performanceBetter low-temp flow but limited high-temp stabilityFR3 well-suited for tropical climates

The deployment of these technologies aligns with Vietnam’s sustainable energy development strategy and contributes to fulfilling the country’s commitment to net-zero emissions by 2050, as announced by the Prime Minister at COP26. The introduction of SF₆-free equipment and biodegradable insulating oil marks a clear step forward in efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, protect the environment, and modernize national power infrastructure.

With more than 20 years of experience as an EPC contractor in the power sector, AIT Group continues to affirm its pioneering role in adopting modern technologies that enhance investment efficiency, protect the environment, and promote green energy transition in Vietnam. The two devices installed and tested at the 110kV Van Giang Substation—with approval EVNNPC—stand as strong evidence of effective collaboration among all parties in applying new technologies toward sustainable development of Vietnam’s power industry.
